Men’s tennis has best finish in 14 years at NCAC tourney

Last weekend Oberlin hosted the NCAC tournament that would crown the conference champions. The Yeomen swept their opponents in two out of three rounds, but lost in the second round to Kenyon College, finishing third.

In the first round, the third ranked Oberlin team took on Wittenberg University, ranked second in their bracket.

The Yeomen jumped out to an early lead by winning two out of the three doubles matches, which put them ahead 1-0 after the doubles.

Seniors Marian Bocek and Jamie Frankel were victorious in the number one doubles slot, 8-4. In a tight match, sophomores David Cotter and Jimmy Rosenheim won at three doubles, 9-7.

Oberlin took the 1-0 lead going into singles play and dominated Wittenberg, winning the first three singles matches played, taking the match 4-0. In the conference tournament, the first team to four points wins the match.

Frankel, Bocek and junior Mark Knee won in the first, second and fourth slots.

For their second round match-up, the Yeomen ran into the number one seed, Kenyon. Kenyon came into the match as two time reigning conference champions.

To open up the second round match, the Yeomen went 1-2 in doubles play, losing two heartbreakers. Frankel and Bocek won the number one singles 8-3. Knee and junior Nick Ogren in the second doubles slot and Cotter and Rosenheim in the number three position dropped two close matches. The doubles teams lost 8-6 and 8-5.

The doubles losses proved to be costly. Frankel and Knee were able to win their singles matches in the one and four spot, but Bocek, Ogren and Rosenheim lost the two, three and four doubles to advance Kenyon to the next round. The Yeomen dropped the match 2-4, never allowing the six and seven singles matches to take place.

Kenyon went on to defeat the College of Wooster 4-2 in the third and championship round to advance to the NCAA tournament.

The Yeomen then turned their attention to their third round match, as they still played to determine the difference between third and fourth place.

Similar to the first round of the tournament, the Yeomen came out firing on all cylinders. The same three doubles pairs remained intact and were victorious as they took on Allegheny College.

In singles play, the Yeomen won the first three matches to sweep Allegheny 4-0. Frankel, Rosenheim and first-year Arthur Zeyda won in the first, fifth and sixth slots.

The third place finish by Oberlin capped off their season with their highest finish in the NCAC tournament since 1990. The Yeomen’s 15-8 record was also their best mark since 1994.

The team will lose only two seniors in Frankel and Bocek, but they were proven strongholds for the team throughout the season and will be greatly missed. Frankel went 19-4 in singles play on the season while Bocek went 13-8.

They also combined to form a number one tandem that went undefeated in the conference tournament. As juniors, Frankel was chosen as first team all conference and Bocek was honorable mention.

The Yeomen will return eight players from this year’s team for next season.
