Mourning Peter Goldsmith

To the Editors:

I was grieved to hear of the passing of Peter Goldsmith in April. Although I only knew him for a short time, Peter was a good friend who touched all those he came in contact with. You could not be in Peter’s presence without intrinsically knowing that he cared about all the students at Oberlin.

During my last year at Oberlin, Peter and I worked closely together along in an ad hoc committee to rewrite the Honor Code. During that process I not only saw his brilliance as an administrator, but also his compassion towards those that would go through the system.

This quality of compassion and fairness infused everyone and everything he came in contact with. Even though Peter was only at Oberlin for five short and, at times, embattled years, Oberlin College will always be better for his presence.

My deepest condolences go out to Peter’s friends and family.
