SUNY-Geneseo outmatches field hockey team

Fighting her way through: Senior Jamie Johnson tries to clear the ball upfield against SUNY-Geneseo.

On Saturday, Sept. 4, known as “Family Day” to many, parents and students alike braved the blistering sun to support the Yeowomen at their second game of the season against the State University of New York Geneseo Knights.

The Yeowomen played a tough game, dominating both halves in shots and possession. Ultimately, though, Oberlin was unable to score and lost to the Knights, 2-0.

Geneseo scored at opportune moments during the game. Sophomore Jeanine Tripepi scored in the first half followed by sophomore Laura Henson’s goal in the final half.

This second goal was contested because it appeared to be shot outside of the circle around the goal, according to Oberlin coaches and fans alike.

Despite what many called a “blatant misjudgment,” the goal was deemed fair by the referees. Oberlin dominated the game in possession and shots, but was unable to
capitalize on any opportunities.

“There was no lack of hustle in this game,” Coach Deb Ranieri said. “We did a much better job with possession.”

The Oberlin defense and offense worked well throughout the game, holding off the Knights for the most part. Much credit is due to first-year goalie Lauren Malinowski, who blocked many difficult shots, including a tough one-on-one.

Praise extends throughout the field, especially to sophomore midfielder Meg Rietz, senior attacker Jaime Johnson and junior defensive player Rosemary Mudry.

At one point during the game, Johnson had a breakaway but was unable to finish after sophomore Krystina Danizio connected with her near the Knights’ goal.

This year’s team combines experience with new talent. With seven new recruits and 12 returning athletes, much of this season’s earlier games will be spent finding the right combination of the two.

“So far the returning classmen and the [first-years] have been complementing each other,” Ranieri said.

Less experienced players were rotated throughout the game to work with the more experienced team members.

“College is a whole new level for a lot of girls on the team,” first-year Kate Cook said, “but the coaches and the older team members are all doing a really good job training us for the next game. It’s a learning experience.”

“There’s a lot of potential on the team this year” Ranieri said. “We’re doing a lot of experimenting.” The field hockey team’s next game is at home against Centre College on Sept. 11 at 1 p.m.
