VB takes sixth

Digging in: The volleyball team battles as they finish sixth in their home tournament.

Last Friday and Saturday the Oberlin College varsity volleyball team served up a new season by hosting their annual tournament, the Oberlin Invitational.

They hit the ground running on Friday night, picking up their first win in a match against the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg (30-22, 30-25, 30-25). The competition grew stiffer in Oberlin’s next match of the evening as they faced off against Olivet College and lost 30-20, 30-21, 30-23. “I think part of Olivet’s win is due to the accidental support of Oberlin fans screaming, ‘Go O.C.!’” said student athletic trainer April Gentile-Miserandino.

Saturday also proved disappointing for the Yeowomen as they fell first to Grove City College (30-20, 30-10, 30-20) and then to Kenyon (30-20, 31-29, 30-25) in a hard-fought match that resulted in Kenyon taking fifth and Oberlin taking sixth overall.

First-year Steele Hearne led the attack for Oberlin, totaling 22 kills during the tournament. Adding to the fire were junior Jeanne Feurerstein, first-year Deysi Villareal and sophomore Callie Sadler, finishing with 20, 17 and 16 kills, respectively. Villareal also led in assists with 53.

The defense was fueled by Feurerstein and sophomore Meaghan Pugh. Feurerstein totaled 57 digs for the weekend with Pugh close behind at 56.

Although the Yeowomen ended the weekend with a losing record, they fought hard in each game and new players gained needed experience at the college level. Villareal’s performance over the weekend earned her the MVP award for Oberlin.

“We have a lot of heart that makes up for the skills we don’t have, but with more practice we will have both heart and skill,” said first-year Jolie Signorile.

On Tuesday Oberlin returned to the court to play a hard match against Bluffton College. But heart still wasn’t quite enough as they lost 30-21, 30-24, 30-22.

Oberlin’s next round of play is on Saturday, Sept. 11 at Theil College as they face Theil at 12 p.m. and LaRoche College at 2 p.m.
