Tide turns, men’s soccer loses two

After ending its undefeated streak at Mount Union College (1-3-1) on Sunday, the men’s soccer team (4-2-1) lost another match against Olivet College (2-1-2) at home on Wednesday, 1-0. Throughout the game, the Yeomen out-shot and out-played Olivet. However, when it came to putting the ball in the net, only Olivet’s Alan Holdorf was able to do so.

“We didn’t have any energy in this game,” Head Coach Blake New said. “Maybe we got too full of ourselves. We started at 4-1-1, this is a team we can beat, we can go through the motions and win.”

As in the previous loss against Mount Union, the opponent put points on the board early on and was able to hold off Oberlin for the duration of the game. In contrast, the games that Oberlin has won have often started with some quick goals by the offense and a never-look-back attitude by the entire team.

According to New, the team usually has trouble with the first home games of the season because of the transition from school to playing. “It comes down to having discipline to get some sleep, stay hydrated and be ready to play,” New said.

Although they didn’t come out with the win, the Yeomen dominated the game, leading in shots on goal. According to New, the men had possession for 70 of the 90 minutes of play.

“We dominated the game, but when you play inferior teams and don’t put them away they will score eventually,” New said. “If you’re not working hard to get in correct position to be dangerous offensively, you’re not going to win games.”

After scoring the first and only goal toward the end of the first period, Olivet fell back defensively and made it increasingly difficult for the Yeomen to rebound.

Tomorrow, the Yeomen will compete at home again, facing Westminster College, a team of equal standing (4-2-1), at 2 p.m.

“We have to have more urgency to score and be disciplined in how we are attacking,” New said. “When we get the ball in the final third [of the field] we need to be hungry.”

According to New there will not be any major changes in team strategy or composition for the weekend match. “I think it’s a very simple change, it’s not something we need to overreact to,” New said. “It’s a lesson that hurts and we can grow from there.”
