City council gives out promotions and vacations
An employee recently returned from Iraq gets vacation time

At its latest meeting the Oberlin city council dealt with a broad range of issues ranging from raising city fees to providing vacation time to a city employee who recently came back from a tour of duty in Iraq.

The most recent session of the council, which took place on Sept. 20, began with a presentation by Adenike Sharpley of Friends of the Oberlin Underground Railroad. The presentation explained the goals and activities of the group, which is seeking an official relationship with Oberlin in order to more easily apply for foundation grants.

After the presentation the council recognized two recently promoted police officers and scheduled a work session for economic development.

Revisiting old business, City Manager Robert DiSpirto informed those at the meeting that the applicants for a temporary tap into the sewers were working on legal questions that should be resolved before the next regular session of the council.

Three new ordinances were presented before the city council, all of which were passed unanimously. The first was an emergency adjustment to the vacation allowance of Oberlin City Police Dispatcher Aneta Ducu, who had returned from serving in Iraq with her National Guard unit. The ordinance guaranteed that she would receive the same vacation allowance had she not been on extended military leave.

Baumann then discussed with the Council another ordinance to raise the deposit required for excavating permits. The council passed this ordinance after the Public Works Director dispelled concerns that an increase in the deposit required would hurt small business.

Chair of the Council Dan Gardner requested that in the future thecCouncil be provided with benchmark data from other towns when changing fees.
