Swimmers compete in conference championships

On Wednesday, the Oberlin Yeo-swimmers and divers left for Canton, Ohio to compete at a conference meet. Thursday kicked off the three-day meet that included nine teams on the men’s side and eight teams on the women’s end, including powerhouse Kenyon College, whose men’s team has won 25 consecutive NCAA Division III championships.

In three men’s and three women’s individual events, five Yeowomen swimmers made it out of the preliminary rounds into the finals, while the men had six swimmers advance.

First-year Kiri Ulmschneider finished the 500-yard freestyle in 5:19.89, good enough for 15th place in the finals.

The men also found success in the 500 freestyle, with senior Ben Pierce and juniors Thomas Limouze and Zach Kaplan-Moss all finishing in the top 20. Limouze finished seventh in a time of 4:46.31 with Pierce 7.51 seconds and one place behind him. Kaplan-Moss took 16th place in 4:59.71.

In the 200-yard individual medley, sophomore Kate Boyd was the sole Yeowomen to qualify for the finals, placing 21st in 2:25.27.

Junior Yorgos Strangas also placed 21st in the 200-yard individual medley for the men in 2:06.40, with senior Joel Ketner right behind him at 2:08.62 in 22nd place. After finishing 14th in the same event, junior Craig Betchart disqualified in the finals.

The fifth event in which Oberlin qualified swimmers in the finals was the women’s 50-yard freestyle. Sophomore Emily Spence and first-year Maura Selenak took 16th and 17th place in times of 25.62 and 25.83.

After the first day of competition the men sit in seventh place with 151 points while the women have 126 points, good enough for sixth place. The meet concludes on Saturday.
