Collins dominates sprints in Winter Term meets

Over Winter Term the most intense of the Oberlin College Track and Field team remained on campus to train and compete. Their first meet was at home on Friday, Jan. 21 in the Heisman Fieldhouse. The men’s and women’s teams won six events at this meet.

Senior Teresa Collins came in first in the 600-meter dash at 1:48.94. She also was the anchor leg in the 4x400-meter relay that placed first. Senior Leslie Bosworth led off the relay and placed first in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.14 seconds.

On the men’s end first-year Cody Hartley came in first in the 55-meter hurdles at 8.52. Sophomore Quentin Jones also secured a win in the 200-meter and junior Shean Perry won the pole vault at 3.95 meters.

On Jan. 29 the Oberlin teams traveled to Denison for the annual NCAC relay races. The men’s team finished second with 30.5 points. The women’s team finished sixth with 38.5 points.

First-year Lily Krichels commented, “We really just went out to have fun and do well and we succeeded in both. All of our meets so far have been during the Winter Term and we’re just happy that the team is more complete now. We all just want to get out there and see what we can do as a whole.”

The team traveled to Case Western Reserve last Friday. The men’s team finished out the meet in sixth place with 49 points. Baldwin-Wallace won the meet with 149 points.

Sophomore Edo Bedzra led the men’s team, winning the 55-meter dash in 6.62 seconds. Another first-year, Anthony Osei, impressed the team in the long jump. Osei came in second at 20’10.5’’. Perry also secured a second place in the pole vault competition at 13’11.75’’.

“We had a lot more people back from Winter Term, so we got to see how the team would compete as a whole,” said Head Coach Jason Hudson. “The team really impressed me, we did very well.”

The women’s team also came in sixth with 31.5 points. Baldwin-Wallace’s women’s team came in first with 207.5 points. In the women’s competition Collins won the 400-meter dash at 61.52 seconds, an amazing two seconds before the runner-up. In the same race, Bosworth came in third at 63.89 seconds.

Reflecting on this meet, first-year Kate Cook said, “Overall I was really happy to see the team together. We have a very good-looking team this year and I am so glad to be on it. I’m just really excited to see how well we can do. Judging from this start, I think we just have a lot of potential.” Oberlin College will host the next track and field meet this Friday, Feb. 11 at 6 p.m.
