Students hope college will recreate teacher certification

Group working to receive planning grant for program

by Ari L. Jones

Obies for Education held a meeting on Monday to discuss some of the steps the group is taking toward re-instituting the teacher certification program into Oberlin's curriculum.

The focus of the meeting centered around student desire to incorporate teaching certification into Oberlin's curriculum so that students can receive teacher certfication within an undergraduate time frame.

One of the purposes of the organization is to assist the College in assessing the needs of students interested in careers in education.

At one time Oberlin had a program which allowed students to matriculate through an undergraduate course of study in Education and then continue on to pursue a Masters of Arts and Teaching degree.

Because no such program now exists, students such as senior Katherine Readey and sophomore Jessica Rigby are working with the Faculty Curricular Committee on Teaching to develop what is called a Planning Grant for Secondary Education. This grant would facilitate the certification procedures for undergrads.

The grant involves setting up a program with Ashland College through which students could receive certification in conjunction with their Oberlin curriculum. Readey says she is "glad that someone is moving on it. The program is overdue."

Oberlin students have demonstrated their concern over the lack of a teaching program by signing a petition posted by Obies for Education on the bulletin board located on the first floor of King Building. Readey said, "As an organization, [Obies for Education] must assess interest to let people know there is an interest for this [program]."

As a second-year student, Rigby is concerned with the reality of such a program being established before she graduates. Optismically, Rigby said, "It's on its way".
