Lack of students at Trustee forum

Lack of advertising partially blamed

by Robin Cowie

No students showed up to voice their concerns at the Class Trustee open forum Thursday night.

The trustees present said that the absence of students was caused by a lack of advertising.

The night before every Board of Trustees meeting, a Class Trustee open forum is held. Its purpose is to bring more student representation to the board meetings by giving students the opportunity to present their problems in an informal setting.

The main focus of the Board of Trustees meeting this weekend will be budget guidelines; the trustees are expected to accept the proposed tuition increase, endowment payout rate and faculty salary pool raise. The $90 million budget up for approval is one that the administration has trimmed by $3.2 million as part of a budget restructuring to eliminate the school's structural deficit.

Another concern that will be brought up by the class trustees deals with the future of the Expository Writing Program at Oberlin. With the recent resignation of Visiting Assistant Professor of Expository Writing and English Wendy Hesford there is concern about the program. Another issue to be discussed is the lack of tenured women faculty members.

There will be talk of students' security concerns, Asian-American studies and the Multicultural Resource Center.

The enrollment committee, which deals with financial aid and minority recruitments within the framework of the current budget deficit, will also meet.
