Arts and Science cuts will also involve other divisions

The College of Arts and Sciences, as well as the Allen Memorial Art Museum, the Office of the Registrar, Mudd Library and the Archives Department are all falling under the collective knife as the school tries to eliminate its 3.2 million dollar structural deficit. Throughout those five divisions, $332,500 is projected to be cut in the budget which was passed by the Board of Trustees last weekend.

According to Dean of the College Mary Ella Feinleib, the cuts will come across in long term planning, as well as in some immediate ones. She also focused on many of the items which will not be changed in the coming semesters. Faculty salaries will be raised by four percent to put them in the range of other schools in Oberlin's categories. However, she also is not looking to hire many new faculty members, "[The college is] probably not looking at any net growth in the faculty," said Feinleib.

She also said it was likely that there would be cuts in the Arts and Sciences staff, although not big ones. The primary source of employment cutbacks will most likely come from people who leave and are not replaced, which is a strategy that many departments have been using. "We are going to look at how various staff members can take more responsibilities," Feinleib said.
