Holy Week participation to be commended

To the Editor:

I would like to commend all the students that participated in the various Holy Week activities. Easter is a very important and reverent time on the Christian calendar, and I was blessed to see students openly celebrating its significance.

These different activities, (slo-mo football, the variety show, the lecture and video tape regarding the message of Martin Luther King Jr., the Gospel Fest and the Resurrection Party), reminded of the history of evangelism at Oberlin College. Charles Finney, the second president of this institution, was a world renowned evangelist, for whom people consistently packed First Church to hear preach. His message was urgent and relevant, challenging people to repent and seek the LORD. Many people did repent prompting an evangelical explosion in this country. Oberlin College was fortunate to have his expertise and faith amongst its faculty for many years before and after he served as president.

I admire the boldness of Charles Finney and his dedication and compassion for the people in his congregation and the Oberlin College community. I also admire the students who organized the aforementioned activities along with those that participated in the "Talk With Me" campaign. I congratulate you students for perpetuating the great legacy of a truly great individual.
