Men's lacrosse team overpowered by Wooster

by Jeremy Brown

The men's lacrosse team faced the College of Wooster on Wednesday under a blue sky and in front of a crowd of fans. The conditions were a bit different from those during last week's victory over Northwood. Unfortunately, so was the final score. In a game that was dominated by Wooster, the Yeomen fell 13-3.

"We had a bad week of practice; lackadaisical, sloppy and unenthusiastic, and that's how we played," said sophomore Garth Stidolph, who saw his first major playing time this week. The Yeomen looked flat, as the Scots out-hustled the Yeomen leading to their clear dominance of ground balls and shots on goal.

"Ground balls killed us," sophomore Sam Krasnow explained, "and the injuries didn't help either." Krasnow himself was one of those injured, suffering a deep thigh bruise, which limited his play time later in the game. First-year Ben Klein also left the game with a sprained knee.

The Scots took an early lead and never looked back. At half-time Oberlin was down 8-0. In addition to the Scots' dominance on the offensive side, their defense was stifling as well. Powerhouse senior scorers Ryan Kelley and Tasker Gundy were routinely double and triple teamed, and along with the rest of the Yeomen were held to very few shots on goal. Wooster's spectacular goal-keeping nullified many of the few chances Oberlin had to score. Junior Eric Kuehnl said, "The goalie was amazing." Kelley still managed a hat trick in the third quarter, accounting for all of the Yeomen's points. Wooster again stepped up their defense, and Kelley's three goals were the extent of Oberlin's scoring. The Scots emerged victorious, 13-3.

The Yeomen were obviously disappointed at the loss, but not discouraged. The Yeomen will meet Wooster on the road on Wednesday.

"It was a bad day," junior defenseman Mike Brown said. Oberlin faces Marietta College away this Saturday.
