Yeomen battle Wooster, loses

If the storm had just hit a little bit earlier. If the game had started a couple of minutes late. Perhaps unfortunately for the Yeomen, Friday's match-up with Hiram University was played to completion, accounting for Oberlin's sixth consecutive loss.

Oberlin battled Hiram on Friday. Despite a good effort from the Yeomen, Hiram took the game 5-2. "We played very good baseball," said first-year Ed Holtz, "Real nice pitching. Real solid." The game ended minutes before the windstorm hit.

The Yeomen met the College of Wooster for a double header at home on Thursday. Although Wooster is ranked 14th in the nation among Division III schools, Oberlin wasn't ready to write off the game. "We beat them last year," said sophomore Raphael Haciski. "We knew we had a chance of beating them this year."

Unfortunatley for the Yeomen, the chance was slim. "We played sloppy in the first game," said Holtz, "We didn't hit very well. There were a couple of errors. Otherwise we played real well." Although senior Ted Lytle added a triple in the first match-up, the offense faltered in the second game. Wooster held Oberlin to one hit among fifteen strike-outs. Sophomore Jason Quinn's strong pitching wasn't enough to put Oberlin ahead. The Fighting Scots danced past the Yeomen 13-2 and 5-0.

The Yeomen continue to be plagued by offensive difficulties. The team has been taking extra batting practice in hopes of correcting their weakness.

Oberlin will have a chance to step up to the plate tomorrow. Oberlin's opponent, Kenyon College, is ranked last in the NCAC. "Kenyon is last in the conference because we're not," said Haciski, "so obviously we have a chance of sweeping the doubleheader." Oberlin has not yet won a conference game.
