Men's lacrosse destroys Marietta

Ryan Kelley leads with seven goals

by Jeremy Brown

Earlier this season, the men's lacrosse team demolished Marietta College 12-1. On Saturday, the Yeomen repeated their performance by popular demand.

Oberlin emerged victorious 15-4, dominating the game in every aspect. In the early goings the Yeomen were almost scoring at will. Senior Ryan Kelley once again proved to be too much for Marietta to handle, adding another seven goals to bring his season total to 47. The entire offense worked well against Marietta's defense, who became increasingly frustrated and began racking up penalty minutes.

Alhough the Yeomen won by 11, the game wasn't even that close. With some players still injured, and most of the starters playing limited time in the last half and defense becoming a little complacent, Marietta was able to score a few last minute goals. Head coach Jim Donovan still scolded his players, "That's what happens when you are not ready!" pushing them for nothing but perfection.

The defense, despite the late brief breakdown, was once again stellar, taking the ball away from Marietta seemingly every time they managed to get the ball down the field. Goalie sophomore Haakon Faste was again a nearly impenatrable wall in the net. Aided by the defense, he shut out Marietta until midway through the third quarter, when they were finally able to get their first goal. The defense was so dominant that Marietta was seldom able to take a shot.

Ohio Wesleyan University never got a shot at Oberlin. It's not often that a lacrosse game gets snowed out in late April, but with the ever changing never consistent northern Ohio weather, that's just what happened this past Tuesday. The Yeomen were to face the Battlin' Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan, who are currently ranked third in the nation. After traveling for two hours the Bishops saw the field conditions and both teams agreed on postponement to the following Tuesday.

The Yeomen still suffer from weak ball movement. The team has demonstrated a tendency not to move around too much on offense, allowing teams to target the main scorers such as Kelley and fellow senior Tasker Gundy. The Yeomen hope to perfect their game before their matchup with Kenyon College on Saturday.

"We've been working on moving bodies around all week in practice, and it's been going well. We're very optimistic about Saturday, we're ready for them." said first-year Marc Gilmore. Oberlin recorded a loss early in the season to Kenyon 20-8. The Yeomen have improved since the defeat and should now match up well against Kenyon.

With their 5-5 record, Oberlin is well on their way to a ninth straight winning season. Unfortunately, the Yeomen have not performed well in the league games, so their league record does not reflect their talent level. They will have the opportunity to show this talent against one of the best in the nation at home Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
