Policy meant to create safe space, not exclude

[Note: The following is an open letter to the Oberlin College Community.]

To the Editor:
By making our visitor's policy more visible this year, we hope to clarify our community's boundaries and dispel destructive myths about the Women's Collective. The purpose of reserving certain areas for women only is not to make anyone feel excluded, but rather to provide Baldwin women with safe spaces in which residents feel free to express themselves and support each other as women. We feel that these spaces are fundamental to furthering our commitment to discussion of women's issues on campus.

The 1996 Baldwin visitor's policy is as follows: The first floor piano lounge and the second and third floor lounges are reserved for women only. Men are welcome in the first floor main lounge, the TV lounge and the third floor kitchen. Men do not need to be escorted by a Baldwin resident, as they will obviously need to pass through the lounges on the way to a friend's room. Male visitors should use the first floor restroom adjacent to Third World Co-op.

We hope that both women and men will feel comfortable visiting Baldwin. We think visitors will find our community to be a warm and accepting one. If you have questions about our visitor's policy, please feel free to ask a Baldwin resident.
