Field hockey gets two weekend victories

by Sarah Barrows

Oberlin enjoyed the triumph of two consecutive wins this weekend against DePauw and Centre.

Unfortunately, the winning streak ended with Wednesday's game against Slippery Rock.

The 1-0 loss to Slippery Rock was "by no means a poor game played," said Coach Mindy Manolovich.

The ball sped between both teams, leaving neither side in a dominating position.

Manolovich said, "We were in it but we didn't pull above it."

In the first half, first-year Lydia Reis had several shots on goal.

While Oberlin managed to deter a goal in the first half of the game, the first minutes of the second half quickly put Slippery Rock ahead.

Oberlin played with intensity but was often quick to commit to the pressing offense; and as players were beat to the ball OC defense became outnumbered. "We have to contain and hold them," Manolovich said.

Slippery Rock's defense and goalkeeper were repeatedly half a step ahead of Oberlin, keeping the ball in the outer reaches of the circle.

Oberlin's sophomore goalkeeper Liz Breakstone played a tough game, stopping many of Slippery Rock's shots on goal and blocking a dangerous free stroke in the second half.

Manolovich pulled the team together after the game and said, "This team showed you what you need to do to pull it up. We need this type of competition to learn how to play better."

Last Saturday's game against DePauw resulted in a 2-1 win for Oberlin. "We played hard … the team pulled together like an amoeba and really pressed them," sophomore Jesse Robinson said.

Oberlin dominated in Sunday's game against Centre College, beating them 5-0.

Oberlin had over 60 shots on goal.

"There was good thinking through the whole game, we were smart players and we contained them well," junior Kate Daloz said.

Oberlin plays conference rival Kenyon Saturday. "Kenyon is a very important game for us," Manolovich said.
