Volleyball spikes three opponents

Team has nearly twice as many wins as 1995

by Geoff Mulvihill

After a 3-2 week, the volleyball team has accumulated a 7-6 record to open the season.

That's an impressive opening. But it's more impressive when you consider that the team won just four matches last year. And just four the year before that.

The week's matches included a win and a pair of losses at the Grove City Invitational in Grove City, Penn., Saturday and wins over Lake Erie College and Thiel College Tuesday at Thiel.

At Grove City, the team beat Carnegie Mellon University three games to one and then fell to Grove City and Marietta in straight games.

Oberlin downed Lake Erie 3-1 and swept Thiel 3-0.

The story of Oberlin's week is like the stories of the past two weeks - that is, different from any of the stories of last year.

"They're getting better every game they play," coach Suzanne Garland said. "We keep introducing more and more features to the offense."

That offense is one that involves the entire Oberlin squad, whereas the past few editions of the team have relied on a few players.

Sophomore Katie Ruth was the relied-upon player last season. She's much happier being part of a winning team effort.

"It feels great to be winning," Ruth said. Ruth said she needs to increase her pre-season prediction that the team would win eight matches.

Oberlin plays at Hiram Saturday then returns home to host Central State and Lake Erie College Wednesday and Friday.
