Volleyball team takes two; record up to 9-7

by Geoff Mulvihill

All three of the volleyball team's matches this weeks were decided three games to none. Two of those games were in the team's favor - enough to send the Yeowomen's overall record to 9-7.

Saturday, Oberlin beat University of Pittsburgh at Bradford 15-3, 15-8, 15-12, and lost to Hiram 15-5, 15-6, 15-12. Wednesday, the Yeowomen came back and swept Central State University 15-12, 15-2, 15-12 in front of a large home crowd.

Coach Suzanne Garland was especially proud of her team's serving effort against Central State.

First-year Jill Brockelman extinguished a feisty Central State team with a serve to end the game. Earlier in the game, sophomore Katie Ruth successfully jump served a series of points.

The match was the second at home for the Yeowomen since the Oberlin Invitational, which opened the season. The audience for the game included several administrators, among them President Nancy Dye.

Between the second and third games, there was a serving contest in which fans could serve the ball for pizzas. None won, but the contest will be back in future home matches.

Neither serving nor passing were solid against Hiram. "Against Hiram, they were a good team, but we didn't play well," Garland said.

Oberlin's victorious sweeps have been encouraging for the Garland. "Once they come out winning, they like to finish the game," she said.

But she predicted that once the team faces more conference opponents, the matches will get longer.

To prepare for those important matches, the Yeowomen are constantly adding new wrinkles to their offense.

Tonight, the squad hosts Lake Erie College, which it defeated earlier in the season.
