Drinking water fine

To the Editor:

In response to a recent letter regarding the quality of city drinking water, I would like to voice my support for the need to protect the nation's rivers and streams and for the public right to know. The city pulls its water from the West Branch of the Black River. While this branch is not a pristine water source, the water shed is not nearly as industrialized as is that of the Black River itself.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) maintains a database of chemicals known to be used within the watershed, and has developed a monitoring program in which the city participates. All tests, as well as a study of the West Branch watershed, are available for public inspection. The City of Oberlin meets or exceeds all OEPA water quality standards for a city of our size.
