Football milks resources

To the Editor:

I write in response to Eric Nordstrom's letter in the Oct. 4 issue. I also am a (former) student, a (former) Review staffer , and a friend and (former) colleague of Greg Munno. whose view of the Oberlin College football program prompted Mr. Nordstrom's missive.

It seems I need to remind the Oberlin College community that the Oberlin Review is to collegiate journalism what the Ohio State Buckeyes are to college football. The Review has consistently been named one of the best student newspapers in the country in Columbia University's annual competition. Virtually all Review staffers are volunteers with no prior journalism experience. Also, there is no formal journalism program at Oberlin. Mistakes will always be made, but it has always astonished me how well the Review has done under the circumstances.

Yes, I suspect that Mr. Munno has indeed spoken to Pete Peterson before, since Mr. Munno is a former sports editor at the Review. And as a former sports editor myself, I can assure you that many of the Review's articles make as few errors as the Yeomen teams score points - although, since it's impossible to make fewer errors than zero, there's a natural tie built in when we're comparing ourselves to the football teams of my era.

I feel uncomfortable with directly criticizing the football team, since I have never played football, but I agree with Mr. Munno that the time has come to seriously consider dumping this drain on the College's resources and reputation. Mr. Nordstrom, I feel even more uncomfortable seeing you criticize the Review , because you seem to lack the necessary analytical skills to be a good reporter in the first place.
