Tribe 8's 'Sco show appalling and behavior unacceptable

To The Editor:

I was appalled to read the article entitled "Tribe 8 headlines a spicy show at the 'Sco" which appeared in your Nov. 1 issue. The events alleged to have taken place at this concert were indecent, offensive and most-probably illegal. Moreover, I find the celebratory attitude with which this event was reported in the Review to be equally offensive. Since when do we celebrate pornography, sexual violence and intimidation? Had this been an analogous sexually-explicit heterosexual event sponsored by Zeke would the campus be celebrating? I hope not, and I urge this community to express outrage in this instance as well. Are we unaware of the Navy's "Tailhook" scandal? Do we so quickly forget (or compartmentalize) the fact that an Oberlin faculty member is currently under suspension for alleged sexual harassment? Does being lesbian somehow free one of the obligation to respect community sensibilities?

I am ashamed as a member of the Oberlin College Community to find that this band was booked by an Oberlin College employee, sponsored by the College, and paid for with College funds - laundered through the SFC, but student tuition nonetheless. I urge the Oberlin Community to reject this behavior as being totally unacceptable and to establish procedures and guidelines to make sure that it does not happen again. I ask colleagues and students, what have we become that such an event does not warrant an instant and intense expression of outrage?
