College and town residents unimpressed with presidential race
Students, faculty and staff discuss their reaction, or lack of reactions, to this week's Presidential election. The campaign season saw general disinterest from students and community members in Oberlin.
Participation by studens low in long-range planning process
Far more faculty and staff than students have participated in Oberlin's long-range planning process. In order to remedy this discrepancy, a final set of focus groups were arranged. The groups were held in co-ops and dorms.
First dean forum held
The first of three candidates for the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences was on campus this week. Geoffrey Feiss, a geology professor at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, spoke at an open forum attended by just one student.
Police investigating incidents
The perpetrators of four assaults on Tappan Square Halloween night have not yet been caught. One victims suggested that the process following the initial report of assault was not handled well. Security continues to patrol Tappan Square.
Convenient Mart closes doors
The Convenient Mart on South Main Street closed recently, providing an open space for the Oberlin Community Services Council. The Council was forced to leave the Community Center after O.H.I.O, the building's owner, altered the building's use.
Student escort service hits ground running
A student-run escort service has been approved by Director of the Office of Safety and Security Keith James. The service is a result of student concerns relating to the present system. James hopes to offer training for volunteer escorts.
Students help Oberlin into Cyberspace Oberlin On Oberlin is the latest addition to campus dialogue. OOO takes the form of a webpage, which the creators feel is preferable to other forms of media. OOO's creators are particuarly proud of the page's interactive component.
LGBU and OLGBA host event
The Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Conference-Reunion, held last weekend, was attended by current students, alumni and visitors from other schools. Oberlin atendees said that the event showed the strength of their community.
PIRG petitions for support of biennial reaffirmation drive
OhioPIRG is currently in the midst of their biennial reaffirmation drive. The organization is hoping to garner enough signatures to approve an increase in funding. The petition is 150-200 names short of the required number of signatures.
