Oberlin must flee from sexual immorality

To the Editor:

Consider these words: "`Everything is permissible for me' - but not everything is beneficial. `Everything is permissible for me' - but I will not be mastered by anything. `Food for the stomach and the stomach for food' - but God will destroy them both. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that those who unite themselves with prostitutes are one with their bodies? For it is said, `The two will become one flesh.' But those who unite themselves with the Lord are one with him in spirit.

Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins people commit are outside their bodies, but those who sin sexually, sin against their own bodies. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body." (1Corinthians 6:12-20)

We the undersigned, as Christians in the Oberlin community, believe these words to be true, and therefore are convicted by and obedient to them. Because we believe this, we cannot condone, participate in or be silent about events like the Tribe 8 concert. Nor do we condemn them, for we also believe the truth of the statement: "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23)." But we have hope for reconciliation with God through his son Jesus Christ, who died and rose for our sins, that we might have abundant and eternal life.
