OC Socialists begin discussion of Need-blind admissions

Posters that appeared on-campus this week urged students to call the President's Office and demand the return of need-blind admissions.

The College stopped admitting students on a need-blind basis in November 1993 in the hopes of strengthening the College's budget and giving students better financial aid.

The posters are the work of the Oberlin Socialist Student Union. Junior Ramy Khalil said that the campaign to bring back need-blind admissions is still in the beginning stages but will be a "longterm campaign, a long battle."

Khalil said need-blind admissions is an issue because, "This campaign is not only about getting Oberlin College to take a stance on education being a human right for all people, but also an issue about student participation and college governance, because the College just started cutting financial aid without consultation to students."

As of Thursday afternoon, Secretary to the President Linda Losneck said she had received about 25 phone calls from students. Losneck said that most students don't call to talk, but say that they want to register their thoughts on need-blind aid. Losneck said that she offers to transfer the students to admissions so that they can speak with someone, but the students decline. "They're not talking much. Only a few say their names," Losneck said.

Mini-Mart closes after 15 years

Mini Mart, an Oberlin thrift institution for 15 years, is closing in March. Owner B.J. Teehan said she's closing the shop because of her arthritis. "I regret having to do it, but I have to do it on account of my health," Teehan said.

Teehan started her shop 15 years ago with an 8-foot long table in the basement of the builidng that now houses Campus Video. For the past 12 years, she's run her store under the Apollo Theater.

Until her closing date, Teehan is putting the used clothing and assorted second-hand items on sale. She estimates that more than 90 percent of her business comes from College students.
