Swimmers drop pair

by Geoff Mulvihill

The NCAC reestablished its talent in women's swimming Nov. 22 and 23 when two of its better teams left Oberlin in their wake in the final two meets of this semester.

Oberlin hosted Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster those days - and lost 126-88 and 134-91.

There were a handful of accomplishments for the Yeomen, including personal bests and a few, very few, race wins.

Sophomore Clara Stemwedel and first-year Julie Fritz were the only Oberlin swimmers to win individual races. Junior Hannah Borthwick won the a meter dive against Wittenberg, though her only competition was teammate senior Liz Edelstein.

Stemwedel's time in the mile - an event rarely swum in dual meets - was 18:50, her second best time ever. Her splits in the first three 500s, which she was concentrating on, were 5:51-5:38-5:38.

Stemwedel also won the 1,000-yard freestyle against Wooster. She finished second in the 500-yard freestyle in both meets.

Fritz won the 200-yard butterfly against Wittenberg convincingly in 2:38.41. It was the first time she has swum the race at Oberlin.

Oberlin's sophomore Sarah Titus, senior Kerri Sutton, first-year Andrea Lindborg and Stemwedel won the 400-yard freestyle relay.

First-year Shana Ageloff finished third in the 200-yard breast stroke against Wooster with a personal best 2:48.88.

Ageloff has already improved upon her best high school times several times this season.

"I'm hoping to continue dropping times," Ageloff said. "I don't know where I can go from here."

This weekend, Stemwedel is swimming at the Miami University Invitational against mostly Division I swimmers.
