Winter Term hard on runners

by Dave Bechhoefer

The members of the men and women's indoor track and field team are enjoying a decrease in responsibilities as a large number of students returning from Winter Term have stepped in to compete. "We're sort of in transition right now," said junior Ellen Kazary. "Our team has almost doubled in size. Now that we have more people we're less stretched." The team had about 11 participants over Winter Term, and they have since swelled to about 30.

With few players during Winter Term, present team members would have to compete in more than one event. Sophomore Amie Ely alone would compete in up to six events on occasion. "I'm planning on doing heptathalons in the spring anyway," she said.

The lack of sufficient people definitely contributed to the results of the team's meets over Winter Term, as they placed fourth out of four teams in their first meet at Baldwin-Wallace College on Jan. 17. At the NCAC relays in the Heisman Fieldhouse on Jan. 25 the men placed eighth and the women ninth out of nine teams. The Yeomen and Yeowomen also placed fourth out of four teams at the team's most recent meet against John Carroll University, Ohio Wesleyan University, the College of Wooster, and Baldwin-Wallace at home on Jan. 31.

In spite of this, the team is optimistic about where they stand as a team. "[Our Jan. 17 meet] went really well for our first meet," sophomore Steven Jackson said, "it showed where our confidence levels were and set the stage for the rest of the season."

This showed at the Jan. 31 meet as junior Stephen Kim placed second in the triple jump with 40' 1 1/2", and Ely placed second in the 300 meter with a time of 46.88. She also had a personal best in the 55 meter to place third with a 8.18 and placed third in the long jump with a 14' 4-1/2".

The team is also understandably pleased to have so many people returning from Winter Term to participate. They now have some middle and distance runners while before their sprinters were forced to run these races.

"I think it'll end up being a good season," Ely said. "Everyone is working hard and that's where we need to start."
