Seniors prepare final dances

Dance Concert highlights student final works

by Rumaan Alam

As the spring semester moves underway, now is the time when dedicated Oberlin students emerge from their studios and practice rooms and share the fruits of their labors with the larger world. For a practice run, before they're shipped off to graduate schools and big cities, Oberlin offers students many different venues for expression.

One such event will be in Warner next weekend. The Senior Dance Concert features exciting new works by senior dance and performance majors.

The concert is divided into two halves. In the first part, three student choreographers, seniors Amy Beth Schneider, Rob Betts and Erica Litke will present their work. Schneider's piece, "Unburdened," examines the idea of high energy movement release, exploring the art of dancing without any restraint. Betts' piece, which is untitled, is a duet with his mother, and explores the unique relationship between a mother and son. Litke's piece, "Hurry Up Please It's Time," draws on Litke's interests as an English major with a concentration in Contemporary Performance. She explores the performative aspects of literature, adapting T.S. Eliot's poem "The Waste Land" for the dance medium.

In the latter half, titled "Excitation Frequencies," senior Sadie Ishee, a Dance major with a concentration in Design, will present the culmination of her honors project. Working in conjunction with four other student choreographers, Ishee examines the relationships between lighting and dance. Choreographers, seniors Frank Shea, Sara Dickie, Erica Litke and Sabina Blaskovic are only four of the over 50 students who have been involved in the project. The entire concert is very much an interdisciplinary student endeavor, featuring exciting collaborations between talented student composers, artists, dancers and choreographers. This production showcases some of the wealth of talent which is characteristic of the Oberlin student body. It promises to be an exciting evening.
