Shuttle service is a safe alternative

The Oberlin Safety and Security Office, the Campus Safety Advisory Committee, the Feminist Majority and Dean of Residential Life and Services Charlene Cole-Newkirk are now providing the student body with a running shuttle service as a pilot program. Although the 20 minute wait may require some patience, the shuttle service is a convenient and safe way for students to travel on and off campus. Whether a student is too drunk to walk home from a party or too lazy to walk into town, the Oberlin Safety and Security Office is providing a responsible service for the student community and should continue to run the shuttle service.

Many colleges and universities across the nation, big and small, have established shuttle services for its students to create safer travel on and off campus. Oberlin should not be an exception. Assaults do happen in Oberlin. In fact, two assaults occurred this week off campus.

Although the shuttle service won't prevent crime on campus or in town, it provides students with a safe alternative to walking during late hours. Students should not, however, feel that the campus is safe simply because the shuttle service is running. Students need to be constantly aware of their surroundings and should continue to follow general safety precautions.
