Trustees meet about budget and planning

The Board of Trustees met March 8 to approve the preliminary budget for 1997-8, approve several spending projects and hear reports about campus events and projects, such as the long-range planning process.

The Trustees heard a lengthy report on the College's investments at the open meeting. The Investment Committee reported the College's assets are invested in both large and small cap domestic stocks, as well as international stocks, hedge funds and venture capital.

Of the 15 managers the College uses to invest their money, two did not meet their benchmarks, or targeted level of return. Others exceeded their benchmark.

According to the Committee, the College's investments have grown in worth from $311 million in December 1995 to $368 million this January.

The Buildings and Grounds Committee requested $600,000 to be reprogrammed for work on the Allen Memorial Art Museum. (see story page)

The Board also heard a report on the Environmental Studies Building. The plans for the project continue to be fine-tuned through committes which are looking at the architectural plans.

Another building project discussed by the Trustees was the Science Center. They approved additional funds for the planning process of the project. (see related story)

A major part of the discussion was about the prelimiary budget. The Board approved the budget. (see related story)

The Trustees also heard reports about curricular and faculty efforts to diversify and strengthen the college as well as a report from the Class Trustee Open Forum and the Division of Student Life and Services.
