Improvisors Nexus play Finney

by Kaety Mayer

Next Wednesday, in the capable hands of world renowned percussion group, Nexus, Finney Chapel may cease being the building we all know and love, and become instead a vehicle shuttling those present through musical time and space.

Nexus' concerts have, in the past, incorporated richly textured improvised pieces 20th century compositions and ragtime, alongside original compositions inspired by African and Indonesian cultures. In addition to their own compositions, their repertoire includes works by world famous composers - arranged for Nexus' unique combinations of instruments - and original works by living composers. Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu's piece entitled From me flows what you call Time was composed especially for Nexus and has earned critical acclaim the world over.

Nexus was formed in Ontario, Canada in 1971 by Bob Becker, William Cahn, Robert Engleman, Russell Hartenberger and John Wyre. Each member of the group, having had his own successful solo career before joining Nexus, contributes his own unique style to the music. This diversity has allowed Nexus to entertain a wide variety of audiences in the past and their appearance in Oberlin should prove to be no exception.

Nexus performs at Finney Chapel next Tuesday Apr. 8 at 8 p.m. Cost is $5 for Oberlin students, $8 for faculty. All other tickets are $12.
