Men's lacrosse team grabs victory 10-4

Game one of best all-around games for Yeomen this season

by Brendan Cody

The men's Lacrosse team went to Marietta College hungry for a win and returned home with a belly full of victory. Saturday's 10-4 rout of the Marietta Pioneers gives the Yeomen a 2-4 record and could prove to be the catalyst that turns their year around.

A flurry of goals from first-year sensation John Steckle got the game off to a quick start. Steckle, who scored three goals in the first 10 minutes, said "I came out strong and hard -- they thought they were strong, but we were stronger." And after that, the game was never close: Oberlin moved the ball around with machine-like efficiency, possessed it skillfully, and dominated the recovery of ground balls. Not only did the team's ten goals represent a season high, but the defensive unit also played excellently. Goalie Scott Sheppard, junior Chris Lavin and senior captains Mike Brown and Dave Kumpe allowed the fewest goals of the season.

Junior captain Sam Krasnow had a spectacular day, scoring a career high five goals -- also the single game scoring record from the Yeomen in 1997. The game was by far the team's finest all-around performance; everyone contributed and the quality of the distribution and passing could be seen in the fact that the team recorded seven assists in its ten goals. Three of those assists came from sophomore Matt Jensen, who continued his strong midfield play.

The Yeomen face a series of tough league opponents this week, including two games against the College of Wooster, but the team has momentum on its side and spirits are high.
