Office of Career Services hires Wendy Smith-Miller to direct

by Melody R. Waller

Wendy Smith-Miller has been named Director of Career Services.

Miller said she is very excited to have the opportunity to move the office forwards in terms of offering workshops and bringing more employers to campus. "I feel that there is a lot of positive energy in the office and I would want to also give credit to the two new career counselors, Terri Bump and Jan Burton."

Miller was hired after an extensive search that began last October. The national search produced three finalists.

Search committee member Dan Gardner, director of the Center For Service and Learning, said,"The committee placed a high premium on student input into the search. It was a unanimous decision and the committee is pleased with it."

Miller said she plans to concentrate on improving outreach to students.

"We're working hard to improve student outreach," said Miller. "Over 600 students came through our office last semester. Most students drop in an average of two times."

Miller said that she would like to see students utilize the office much more.

"Seniors especially need to come and use our databases. Our website has an extensive amount of information and it is easy to access thousands of internship and job leads. You can't just come in once and expect to walk out with a job. Frequent visits will help you research a position that is right for you," said Miller.

The Office is also working with the Center for Service and Learning. A collaborative effort between the two offices landed a grant to fund a new non-profit leadership program which is currently being developed.

A search is being planned to find a Director for the Business Initiatives Program. The position was vacated by Perry Boyle in June 1997.
