Tuba recital makes the web

by Lauren Viera

Oberlin is up to par when it comes to the Internet, but there are still a few firsts that have yet to happen. Oddly enough, the tuba is making quite a dent in the history of Oberlin On-line.

Sunday's Tuba Studio Recital will mark the first time any Oberlin concert has been broadcast on the World Wide Web. "Our professor wanted to do it," said conservatory senior Jeremy Stoner, a member in the small ensemble. The group, led by Professor of Tuba Wesley Jacobs, took on the honorable project of organizing the concert in October.

"We've been working with [Associate Professor of Electronic/Computer Music] Richard Povall, and Dean [of the Conservatory] Wolff has been helping us out with funding for software," Stoner said. Povall and several students in his labs worked out the technical logistics of the event while the tuba players practiced away.

The on-line concert will be broadcast via the Oberlin web server and thus accessible from anywhere in the world on the Internet. However, unlike most other on-line concerts, the event will not be live. The Internet broadcasted of Sunday's Tuba Studio Recital will take place two hours following the concert at 10 p.m. The URL for the event is: http://www.oberlin.edu/concert.
