Sarge, Booby Trap and others slated to perform at WRC-sponsored concert

Lauren Viera

Celebrating girl power through the genres of punk pop and indie rock, the Women's Resource Center and college sophomore Jesse Woghin came together to host an evening of live music tonight with indie starlings Sarge, plus campus band Booby Trap, a capella group Nothing But Treble and college juniors Rosie Heritier and Correne Spero delivering acoustic sets.

While the WRC is lucky to host all of tonight's femme performers, the fact that highly sought-after Sarge is playing will be the real crowd-drawer. The pop band, fronted by Elizabeth Elmore, was formed in 1995 when she and bassist Rachel Switzky were introduced by a friend in common. After sifting through a few drummers and guitarists -Êthe current line-up includes Chad Romanski and Pat Cramer - Sarge has made quite an established position as a Mud Records artist, opening for Chicago favorites like June of 44 and others.

Eventually, the press caught on to Sarge's success, and took note. CMJ Monthly even asked the band to do a write-up back in 1996, and last year, following the release of their debut full-length, Charcoal, Sarge garnered clips in Alternative PressÊand various fan zines.

But even after their crowds started to get larger and the industry started paying attention, Sarge stuck to their indie rock cred plan and continued to tour around the States, playing small shows to the good folks they loved.

And now, with The Glass Intact, released in March, under their belts, Sarge are ready to take Oberlin by storm. The album's mixture of innocent girly stuff and hard-core feminist rage balance each other for a fluid hour of tunage. Sarge is cool like that: Elmore can rock out as well as she can swoon in almost hushed tones, and her bandmates back her all the way with quality beats and thoughtful melody. And if they're that good in your car stereo, imagine them on Woodland Street.

Sarge, Booby Trap, Nothing But Treble, Rosie Heritier and Correne Spero play tonight beginning at 9 p.m. at the Women's Resource Center located at 124 Woodland St. Admission is free.
