Arts...Out of Town

Arts...Out of Town has been used as a resource to escape Oberlin for the weekend, but what about those that are stuck here for the summer? Heck, you could even audition for Rent if you wanted. Read on for further vacation options.

The Firelands Association for the Visual Arts (FAVA) presents "The Artist as Quiltmaker VIII," on display through July 26. FAVA is located at the New Union Center for the Arts in downtown Oberlin. For more information, call (440) 774-7158.

Did you go see Rent? Did you love it? Do you wish you were in it? This could be your big break. On June 1, Rent producers are having an open call audition for equity and non-equity college-age actors at the Cleveland Playhouse Square Center. For more information, call (216) 348-7915.

The Cleveland Museum of Art hosts their annual Parade the Circle celebration through this month. Various workshops focusing around art lectures and creative projects began May 1. Every weekend, a different Basic Workshop is the focus: Fridays through June 12 are scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays through June 7 are scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. In addition, there are special morning workshops on Batik Making, Stiltwalking and other activities. For more information, call (216) 421-7340, ext. 265.

Contributing to the recent Kander craze, this weekend is your last chance to see Chicago, starring Alan Thicke (yes, the dad from "Growing Pains"), Belle Calaway and Stephanie Pope. Showing at Cleveland's Playhouse Square Center, the musical runs tonight and Saturday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m. with a 2:30 p.m. matinee Saturday, and Sunday May 24 at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $26.50 and up. For more information, call (216) 771-4444.

Running through August 8 at the Wexner Center for the Arts, "The Collections of Barbara Bloom," "The Serial Attitude," and "Rodney Graham" explore everything from a California artist's explorations in media to a collection studying mathematics, language and logic. For more information, call (614) 292-9923.

If your favorite summer pastime has more to do with moshing than looking at art, you're still in luck: punk pioneers Avail visit Peabody's on May 26, with Caramel and The Dumas Band. Showtime is 8:30 p.m. with $7 tickets, plus a $2 under-21 service charge. For more information, call (216) 241-8288.
