Security Notebook


The following is a compilation of weekly reports from the Office of Safety and Security.

April 11, 8:34 a.m. An officer while on patrol heard a loud noise. Upon exiting the Security vehicle it was found the passenger side exterior mirror had fallen off and the bracing arm was broken.

April 13, 3:38 p.m. An officer responded to a reported theft of a Palm III hand held computer, serial number and value unknown, from a meeting room in Biggs.

April 14, 11 a.m. A student reported the theft of her bicycle, a men's 10 speed, possibly a Schwinn with bright blue tape on the handlebars, valued at $40, from the south side of East Hall.

1:15 p.m. An officer responded to assist a student who fainted in the locker room area of the Conservatory. The student left the Conservatory to return to her room prior to the officer's arrival. Residential Life was notified.

5:37 p.m. A student reported receiving threatening email. The email detailed the students movement for almost a 24 hour period and referred to the Forest Guardians, a forest protection group in New Mexico who received a pipe bomb.

April 15, 7:15 a.m. An officer responded to a report of students demonstrating at Cox Administration Building.

11:27 p.m. An officer and Oberlin Police Department responded to a report of a student struck by a vehicle outside of Wilder Hall. The student was transported to Allen Memorial Hospital for treatment and later released to her parents. Residential Life was notified.

April 16, 12:39 p.m. An officer and Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at the Safety and Security Office. The alarm was caused by a malfunctioning smoke detector.

7:33 a.m. An officer and Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at Bosworth and Asia House. The alarm was activated by a power outage in the area.

11:53 a.m. An officer responded to a report of vandalism to a vending machine in the northeast stairwell of King. The flap door was drawn up causing a bracket to bend inside the unit and preventing product to drop.

1:08 p.m. A resident of South Hall reported the glass in the northeast door was shattered. The damage appeared to be consistent with either a strike or kick to the bottom of the door. A work order was filed for repair.

April 17, 10:21 a.m. An officer responded to a reported theft of a Nikon 35mm 2 to 3 rolls of film, telephoto lens and flash, valued at $800, from the New Field House.

12:35 a.m. An officer responded to assist a student who fainted in the Field House parking lot. No medical assistance was required. The student was transported to her residence. Residential Life. was notified.

12:58 p.m. An officer and ambulance responded to a report of a student who fell off a hammock and was having difficulty breathing. The student declined medical treatment. Residential Life was notified.

3:44 p.m. A resident of North Hall reported his gray and black Hitachi Camcorder in a gray case and valued at $1854.90, was discovered missing from his unlocked room upon his return in February for Spring Semester.

3:38 p.m. An officer responded to assist a student who was ill at Baldwin. The student was transported to Allen Memorial Hospital for treatment.

4:36 p.m. An officer responded to the report of vandalism at Jones Field House. The automatic batting cage was turned over and the batting cage was tipped. A plexiglass window in the Field House was also knocked out.

April 18, 12:18 a.m. Students working at Allen Art Department reported accidentally activating the fire alarm system while sanding. Oberlin Fire Department was notified.

1:19 a.m. An officer responded to a request to assist a student and two visitors in North Quad who were ill from drinking alcohol. The subjects were transported to their rooms. Residential Life was notified.

3:25 p.m. A resident of North Hall reported the window in room 103 was accidentally broken when a football was thrown. A work order was filed for repair.

7:57 p.m. An officer responded to a reported theft of a TAMA Bass Drum Pedal, chrome with white beater, chain drive, valued at $100, from the Conservatory.

April 19, 1:36 a.m. An officer responded to the report of a visitor verbally harassing a prospective student. Residential Life was notified. Arrangements were made for the visitor to stay at another location.

5:08 p.m. An officer responded to assist a student who fainted after donating blood for the Lorain County Blood Bank at Wilder Hall.

10:48 p.m. An officer and Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm on the second floor of Wilder Hall. The alarm was activated when a student accidentally leaned against a pull station.

April 20, 12 p.m. An employee of South Hall Kitchen reported the theft of a bottle of Kahlua valued at $8. A Safety and Security officer responded and observed screws missing from a metal grate on the refrigeration mechanical door and a ventilation screen near the dish machine.

5:01 p.m. A resident of Dascomb reported the theft of her green, Sears Free Spirit, black trip, women's mountain bike, valued at approximately $100, from the north side of Dascomb.

11:39 a.m. Allen Memorial Staff reported a student was brought to the emergency room by the Oberlin Police Department for treatment.
