Security Notebook


The following is a compilation of weekly reports from the Office of Safety and Security.

Sept. 1, 2:23 a.m. An officer responded to a report of a resident of Zechiel who had been stopped by county law enforcement officers after flagging down vehicles in the area of St. Rt. 58 and Butternut Ridge Road. The student, who was reported to be intoxicated, became lost walking to Zechiel. The student was returned to his residence hall.

Sept. 1, 12:50 p.m. An officer responded to a report from a staff member of saliva on his windshield. The staff member had parked his vehicle on Woodland Street at 4:30 a.m. When he returned later at 9:30 a.m., he observed saliva on the front windshield.

Sept. 1, 11:30 p.m. An officer responded to a report from a resident of Langston Hall of harassing messages left on her dry erase board outside her room door. An additional message was reported on Sept. 3 at 7:55 p.m.

Sept. 2, 6:45 p.m. An officer responded to a report from a student of the theft of approximately $100 cash and a checkbook from her bag left in the dining area of Dascomb Hall.

Sept. 3, 9:14 a.m. An officer responded to a report from a staff member of a key missing from the office in Barrows. It was last seen on Aug. 26, 1999 and first noticed missing during a routine audit on Sept. 1, 1999.

Sept. 3, 1:50 p.m. An officer responded to a call at the Wilder Hall parking lot where a visitor to campus had fallen. She was given some ice for her ankle and said she would take care of the scrape herself.

Sept. 3, 11:33 p.m. An officer and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in third floor of East Hall. The alarm was activated by a squirt gun.

Sept. 4, 10:54 a.m. An officer responded to a report of a lost set of keys. A Student reported she lost a set of keys in the Stevenson lounge at the Conservatory on Sept. 2.

Sept. 4, 6:35 p.m. An officer responded to a report from a student of a disassembled locking mechanism from a cabinet in the Bibbins wing of the Conservatory. The contents of the cabinet remained intact and undamaged.

Sept. 6, 2:50 a.m. An officer responded to a theft of a bicycle from Harvey House. The bicycle is a light baby blue painted over dark blue with chipping paint and rust. It has a white seat and purple Fisher Price horn on the handlebar. The frame has a bar connecting the seat to the handlebars. It has no brand name and is valued at approximately $30. The bike was not locked at the time of theft and was not registered with the Oberlin Police Department.

Sept. 6, 1:30 p.m. An officer and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in the basement gym of Asia House. The alarm was activated by seepage and dampness.

Sept. 6, 12:03 p.m. An officer and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in the Third Floor Corridor of Langston Hall. The alarm was caused by a malfunctioning smoke detector.

Sept. 7, 6:50 a.m. An officer and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm on the second floor of Dascomb. The alarm was due to a malfunctioning smoke detector.
