Security Notebook


The following is a compilation of weekly reports from the Office of Safety and Security.

Wednesday, Sept. 22, 9:45 a.m. A student identified his missing bicycle at Wilder Hall. The bicycle was transported to the Safety and Security Office for safekeeping until proof of ownership is provided.

Saturday, Sept. 25, 8:30 p.m. A student reported the theft of a set of Christmas lights, a plastic work light and some bamboo poles from a structure on the west side of Talcott used for the observation of Yom Kippur. No value was placed on the missing items.

Sunday, Sept. 26, 12:23 a.m. A Safety and Security officer transported an ill visitor from Fairchild Hall to the hospital for medical attention. The visitor was treated and released to her parents.

Sunday, Sept. 26, 1:35 p.m. Staff reported the theft of a banner from the entrance of Allen Memorial Art Museum. The banner is a canvas, hand painted 6' x 8', black and white portrait of a man's head. It was titled "German Art and Expressionism" and valued at $400.

Sunday, Sept. 26, 2:00 a.m. A resident of East Hall reported stepping on a piece of glass while walking through Tappan Square. The student was transported to the hospital for treatment and released.

Sunday, Sept. 26, 7:04 p.m. A student reported the theft of his bicycle from South Hall. The bicycle is a black, men's Ross Mt. Rushmore bicycle, valued at $100. The bicycle was not locked at the time of theft.

Monday, Sept. 27, 2:30 p.m. Staff at the Art Building reported the theft of two archive posters from an exhibition. The posters were displayed in the corridor south of Fisher Hall, on the first floor of the old section. One poster, approximately 18" x 24" displayed pink and black images on a white background. The second was black and red on a white background and advertised the Drag Ball. The posters were irreplaceable archives. The theft is being investigation by Oberlin Police Department and the Safety and Security Office.

Tuesday, Sept. 28, 9:57 a.m. A staff member reported damage to her vehicle parked in the Service Building parking lot on Thursday, Sept. 23 1999 at approximately 8:30 a.m. When she returned to the vehicle at 4:30 p.m. the driver's side rear door was dented.

Tuesday, Sept. 28, 11:00 a.m. A student reported the theft of a bicycle from Old Barrows. The bicycle is a maroon Trek with a gel seat and has a plastic bag wrapped around the handlebar. The bicycle is valued at $200 and was not registered with the city.

Tuesday, Sept. 28, 4:16 p.m. A student reported being followed from the Subway restaurant in the Oberlin business district, to Tappan Square. The subject, described as a black male in his early 20s, wore a white long sleeved shirt, dark pants and sun glasses. He showed her pictures of nude women in a newspaper he carried and asked for her opinion. The incident is under investigation by the Oberlin Police Department and the Safety and Security Office.

Tuesday, Sept. 28, 8:30 p.m. A student reported his bicycle missing from the bike rack at Asia House. The bicycle is a Fuji Sunfire, red in color with some rust spots, black/gray grips, and a kryptonite lock on the rear seat. It was valued at $200 and registered with Oberlin Police Department.

Wednesday, Sept. 29, 12:57 a.m. A student reported an abandoned bicycle in the tree lawn. The bicycle, a green Trek 24' multitrack 720, valued at $100 was transported to the Safety and Security Office for safekeeping.
