IN THE LOCKERROOM WITH...Susan Oliver
In what was by far our strangest interview to date, Susan Oliver, the newest addition to the All-star staff that is the Oberlin College Sports' Medicine Department, sat down for a few questions.
Oliver's allegiance to co-editor and proud OC sports medicine member Steve Manthe was demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Tell the truth, you're attracted to me, right?
(laughs) Um (long pause), can you say guffaw?
If you want, I'll leave right now. I don't want to impose.
I'm sorry.
Let's move on. Tim's (Tim Carver, head athletic trainer) a real slave-driver. How do you deal with it?
I don't think he's a slave-driver at all. We get along well.
When you're taping someone's ankles, do you ever bend down and sniff someone's toes, just for fun?
Uh, no I don't actually ever bend over to tape them, but oftentimes the smell wafts up into the nostril area.
What's the weirdest injury you've ever treated?
I actually had a girl who, um, hit her thigh on a bike, upper thigh area - I don't know how to say this - and the bike didn't have a seat. She had a bruised "pelvic area."
So you're saying that you've treated a girl who lacerated and bruised her own privates?
I think so.
You recently had back surgery. Did you have a bedpan?
No, I actually did not need a bedpan, or crutches for that matter. I was up and moving the next day.
But you couldn't work? Must've been a serious surgery.
It was doctor's orders.
Are you a closet country music fan?
Yes. It's very addictive. I like the classic numbers, like Barbara Mandrell.
What's your favorite OC sports team?
Women's lacrosse. This year was the first time I had ever seen the sport. It's fun.
You're an alum of Heidelberg College. In a rumble between student trainers at Oberlin and Heidelberg, who'd win?
Um, Heidelberg, because they're actually student trainers, not training aides

What are they talking about?
This week...
'Stall'
Sport: Lacrosse; sometimes basketball
What it means:
This is a general term for any play or series of plays designed to move the ball from player to player with as little risk of turning it over to the other team as possible. It generally involves players with good ball control skills (cradling in lacrosse or dribbling in basketball) holding onto the ball as much as possible.
In basketball, this type of game plan is usually known as a 'spread' offense, whereby the five offensive players arrange themselves on the outside of the three-point line and wait until the shot clock has almost run out before attempting a shot.
