Yeowomen Topple Ohio Wesleyan in Overtime Thriller

by Brooke Whitmore

The Oberlin College field hockey team is fighting to gain momentum for the season. Beating Ohio Wesleyan 5-4 in overtime but losing to DePauw 1-2 again in overtime.

On Sept. 9th the team traveled to powerhouse Ohio Wesleyan for a bout that will be remembered. Senior Abigail Chatfield started the game off by assisting junior Emily Johnson on her second goal of the season. OWU struck back quickly creating a tie. The game remained 1-1 going into halftime.

Early in the second half the Battling Bishops picked up two quick goals creating a looming gap for the Yeowomen, but Oberlin had no lack of determination. Johnson came to the rescue by assisting sophomore Briana Quinn to her first goal of the season. Thirteen minutes later junior Jenny Lusk-Yablick tied the game at 3-3 off of a snappy assist from sophomore Chaney Stewman.

Oberlin then took the lead with only a minute left to play in regulation with a slick goal by Chatfield, which was assisted by Lusk-Yablick. Before they could even start believing they were going to win, fate again had itıs way, and OWU slithered a shot into the nets with a mere 30 ticks left on the clock. Oberlin field hockey is no stranger to overtime, and this time they came out hungry for a much-deserved win. Wirth answered the call for victory with a screaming goal to seal OCıs first victory of the season.

³The reason why we beat Ohio Wesleyan is because we put more into it,² said Johnson. ³We had the winning mentality.²

The following Sunday Oberlin met with DePauw University. The first half followed a familiar pattern of strong defense from both teams and a failure to capitalize on goal scoring opportunities.

Chatfield started off the action in the second half by entering the top scorers list on her team as she made a solo effort placing the ball in the back of DePauwıs net. DePauw responded with a goal of their own eight minutes later. The regulation clock ticked to a stop with the teams at another tie, a result of strong OC defense.

These two teams proved a more than equal match, going through two fifteen-minute periods of overtime before going to strokes (for more information on strokes, see page 16). Unfortunately DePauw came out on top scoring two strokes to Oberlinıs one, scored by Stewman.

³Theyıre historically a more physical team,² said junior goalkeeper Pamela Walker. ³Skill-wise we outplayed them the whole game.² The Yeowomen had some difficulty because it was their first game playing on artificial turf, which makes the ball roll much faster.

³[First-year goalkeeper Ilana Turnoff] stepped up to the job,² said Johnson. Turnoff played her first game of the year.

The ladies take the field today at Wittenberg, then travel to Earlham on Saturday. They will host Kenyon next Wednesday at 4:30.
