History Prof. to Give Speech on African Cultural History

Steven Feierman, a history professor from the University of Pennsylvania, will deliver a free lecture on Monday. His speech “will focus on the development of a critical approach to studying African cultural history and the difficulties that this has presented to authentic representation of specific African cultures,” according to a press release.
Frierman “will discuss the advances in this field of study, the resulting challenges, and suggest ways to write about African histories and cultures while avoiding certain pitfalls.”
Frierman is a renowned scholar and has experience apprenticing traditional healers in Eastern Africa. He is a prolific author and has penned such titles as Peasant Intellectuals: Anthropology and History in Tanzania and The Social Base of Health and Healing in Africa.
Frierman will speak at 7 p.m. on Monday in Wilder, room 101. His visit is sponsored by the Mead-Swing Lecture Committee.

American Cancer Society Grants Survivors Scholarships

The Ohio Division of the American Cancer Society offers 30 $1000 scholarships to cancer survivors in higher education.
Proceeds for the scholarships came from Relay for Life, the Society’s activity, to honor cancer survivors and their relatives. Raising millions of dollars, teams walk around a track all night. This symbolizes the idea that “there is no finish line until we find a cure.”
An American Cancer Society press release outlines criteria for scholarship applicants. They must be Ohio residents who were diagnosed with cancer before age 21. At the time of application, they must be younger than 25 and intend to attend an accredited academic institution in Ohio.
Scholarships will be granted based on “scholastic performance, community service and leadership.”
The American Cancer Society’s main goal is the elimination of cancer as a major health problem through prevention, life-saving, reduction of suffering, awareness, advocacy and community service.
The deadline for application is March 31. For more information call 1-888-ACS-OHIO, or visit www.oh.cancer.org.
