Men’s Soccer Falls to Wittenberg
Yeomen Fall to 0-4 in NCAC Play, 1-8 Overall

by Benjamin Pred

In their most brutal loss thus far in the season, the men’s soccer team fell by a score of 11-0 to the Wittenberg Tigers on Wednesday, Oct. 10. The loss dropped the Yeomen’s North Coast Athletic Conference record to 0-4 on the season, and their overall record fell to 1-8.
Wittenberg scored eight goals in the first half, including one just into the second minute of play, and almost as an afterthought scored three in the second half. The Tigers aren’t a weak team by any means, but they aren’t the Brazilian national team either. “That game was the most embarrassing moment in my entire playing and coaching career,” Coach Blake New said.
Further embellishing his disgust, New went on to point out, “We talk a good game, but we don’t back it up with our actions.” Oberlin’s all-conference junior forward Rich Braithwaite said that he had no comment about the game. It’s all in the numbers. Oberlin was out-shot by a season-high 29 to seven, and was able to match Wittenberg’s eight corner kicks with a paltry two.
The goalie for the Yeomen, junior Yoav Tal, had 18 saves, and the Tiger goalie, Danny Carman, had zero. Both Duke Armstrong and Stefan Christman scored hat-tricks for Wittenberg. Stevie Cassiere had two goals and Josh Curtis subtly continued the bloodletting with one more jab into the guts of the Yeomen.
So far this season, the Yeomen have been out shot 146 to 67. They have been outscored 39 to eight; 11 of those 39 goals, or 28 percent, were scored by Wittenberg in this one game.
Tomorrow, the Yeomen will travel to Hiram at 2 p.m., and the squad will venture to Wooster at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
