Volleyball Loses to Wooster and Ohio Wesleyan
by David Cammarata

Volleyball. As a sport it is very demanding and forces the athletes that participate to constantly strive to become better. The Oberlin College Women’s Volleyball is a team that has striven to succeed at all costs.
This can be seen in sophomore Darci Leonhart’s 275 assists to date for the season. This ability to share and be the center of scoring is what will get this team through the dark days of the season. First-year Stephanie Rooker’s kill percentage of –0.14 leads the team for the season and shows that there is a silver lining to the overcast skies. The kill percentage is figured by taking the number of successful kills, or spikes in layman’s terms, minus the number of errors, or unsuccesful attempts, divided by the total number of attempts. For example, three kills and one error in four attempts would be .500 kill to error percentage.
On Saturday, Oct. 6, the Yeowomen battled the College of Wooster and Ohio Wesleyan University. Even though the Yeowomen were dispatched in three sets each match, there were some very impressive stats contained within these depressing defeats.
In the battle against the College of Wooster the Oberlin College women’s volleyball team lost 30-16, 30-21 and 30-18. First-year Oneida Trainor played in all three games and had a –0.11 kill percentage. Another highlight during these three games was sophomore Adrienne Zoller and her six kills, five digs and one blocked shot. Another outstanding performer in this game was sophomore Amber Coleman; she put up five kills and two saves. These performances speak for themselves. The amount of effort that these women put into this game will not be recorded in the final tally of the season, yet it will be remembered for future years when they are prepared to attack another team.

Junior Leah Freedman played in one of the games against Ohio Wesleyan University. In this game she posted a 0.00 kill percentage and first-year Rachel Cohn had four digs. While the Yeowomen fell 30-20, 31-29 and 30-23 the effort that was put into these games was valiant, and even though they lost, the volleyball team will be prepared to play Ohio Wesleyan University the next time they come around.

For the season, Coleman has 145 kills and sophomore Eden Trenor follows a close second on the team with 133. These two women have combined for 67 assists and 44 blocked shots. Even though sophomore Laura Wallerstein has only played in 11 games, it is possible to see the lift that she has given her team. She has a –0.06 kill average for the season and his participated in a way that is both vocal and supportive of her teammates.

On Oct. 10 the Yeowomen played against Allegheny College (Pa). This contest of wills featured Trenor’s nine kills. As she battled her opponents the team fell 30-11, 30-13 and 30-16. This being the second team that the Yeowomen have faced from Pennsylvania, they were handed their 20th loss of the season. Their record is now 1-20 overall and 1-5 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

Also, Leonhart helped the team with 10 assists and one dig. Trainor participated in all three of the games and able to supply three digs on defense.
The Yeowomen will take on Case Western Reserve University in Philps Gymnasium this Saturday at 1 p.m.. They then have a week off before they travel to Springfield, Ohio, to play both Wittenberg University and Kenyon College at Wittenberg, on Oct. 20.
