Reconsider
Charfauros Dismissal
To
the Editors:
To
Nancy Dye: I urge you to reconsider your decision in regards to
Professor Antoinette Charfauros McDaniel. Although I have never
had her as a professor, I feel that she is an important leader and
role-model, both for students and for faculty around the country.
She organized the East of California conference and has been instrumental
in the formation of the Comparative American Studies program. Her
influence goes beyond the students in her classes, and her long-term
vision and activism are truly special.
This is an exceptional situation, and I urge you to make an exceptional
decision. Overturn the CFCs previous decision, for it would
truly be awful to lose Charfauros McDaniel and her incredible vision
which helps Oberlin live up to the opening sentences of its mission
statement: Oberlin College, an independent coeducational institution,
holds a distinguished place among American colleges and universities.
Oberlin was the first college to grant undergraduate degrees to
women and historically was a leader in the educating of blacks;
its heritage is one of respect for the individual and active concern
for the larger society.
