CDS
Dishes Out New Meal Options
by Jake Brody
In
order to better cater to Oberlins diverse array of eating
preferences and scheduling needs, Campus Dinning Service plans to
offer four new meal plans and several new services estimated to
occur next year.
These changes are intended to minimize costs for both students and
the college. Among other changes, CDS plans to install a sandwich
bar in the Rathskeller and move Fourth Meal to Dascomb. While there
will be four new plans, they will not all be universally available
to students.
According to Associate Director of Residential Life and Services
Kim LaFond, one of the new plans, a block plan, is aimed at athletes
and others who have irregular eating schedules, and therefore find
themselves not using their meals one week while being short the
next. The proposed block plan will consist of 160 meals a semester,
accompanied by flex dollars. This meal plan will be available for
students beginning in their sophomore year.
Another plan, tentatively named the Ultimate Meal Plan, will offer
students of all years four meals a day. For seniors living off campus,
CDS will be offering a new five meal plan with added flex dollars.
Exact prices and the specific amount of flex dollars are not available,
although LaFond did say that the proposed new plans were created
in an effort to save money for students, while adding flexibility
to their eating schedules.
With planned price cuts also comes a restructuring of current dining
hours and offerings. Under the new plan, Talcott will no longer
serve dinner, while Stevenson will open at 11:30 a.m., eschewing
all current breakfast offerings. The Rathskellers new offerings
will still be purchasable with flex dollars. Finally, Décafé
will be remodeled in order to offer better selection, more seating,
and most importantly, stressed LaFond, more comfortable accommodations.
