Small Group of Track Stars Shines at Emory
by Colin Smith

Thirteen men and women from Oberlin’s track and field teams got an early start to the season last weekend, braving rainy weather at the Emory Classic in Atlanta, Ga. Although scoring was not their goal, the men finished tied for 16th out of 18 teams, and the women tied for 10th.
Oberlin’s top finisher at the meet was Laura Feeney, with a second place time of 18:10.61 in the 5000m.
“I was looking more for time [than place-finish],” Feeney said. “I was hoping for a little bit faster, but I was happy with it.”

The Yeomen and Yeowomen had eight other top 10 finishes. On the men’s side, the 4x100m relay team took seventh place with 45.94s, and senior Greg Wells placed ninth in the high jump with 1.88m and seventh in the javelin with 44.73m. Wells also placed 14th in the long jump.

Junior Emily Enderle and senior Anna Ruth accounted for the other top finishes, as they both had a well-rounded day, participating in four different events — the 100m hurdles, the high jump, the javelin, and the shot put. Enderle took third in the javelin and eighth in the high jump, while Ruth placed sixth in the high jump and 10th in the javelin.
“I think we did very well for the conditions,” Feeney said. “The ones who went had fun.”
For the rest of the team, the season will begin on Saturday as they travel to Cleveland for a meet at Case Western Reserve University. Feeney said the meet will be chance for to test themselves.
“This meet is kind of [for] personal goals,” she said. “It’s just about us going out there and seeing what we’ve got.”
From there the team will begin working toward the end of the season, when the Yeomen and Yeowomen hope to be hitting their peaks.
