Volleyball
Team Sports Same Faces
By Colin Smith
It’s the usual suspects this year for the
Oberlin women’s volleyball team. When the team opened its
season on Aug. 30, every member of the 2001 team was present.
With no graduating seniors lost last year, the team showed stability
in returning all of last year’s squad. The team added a handful
of first years to round out the mix. The Yeowomen look to improve
upon last year’s records of 1-7 in the North Coast Athletic
Conference and 2-28 overall.
Oberlin began the season by hosting a two-day tournament last Friday
and Saturday. The Yeowomen lost matches to Wilmington, Penn State
Behrend and Widener during Friday’s play, while Messiah College
went on to win the tournament.
Most recently the team traveled to Cleveland to square off against
John Carroll University. The Yeowomen lost the match in three games,
30-16, 30-17 and 20-30. Juniors Adrienne Zoller and Darci Leonhart
provided the highlights of Oberlin’s play. Zoller had six
kills and seven digs, while Leonhart provided 15 assists.
Other returning players expected to make big contributions are junior
Amber Coleman and Eden Trenor. Coleman was a standout player last
year, with 194 kills, 66 assists, 21 service aces, 248 digs and
19 block solos. Trenor had 26 service aces and 221 kills.
The Yeowomen will continue to search for their first victory today
and tomorrow in a North Coast Athletic Conference hosted by Allegheny
College in Meadville, Penn.
