CDS Dining Plans Hit New High of $14.50 a Meal

The College’s meal plan has hit a new high: students on the five-meal plan are now paying $14.50 a meal. That’s about twice the cost of buying each dinner meal individually at $7.50.
“I think that there’s two separate programs there,” Oberlin’s Bon Appétit General Manager Jack Cahill said. “We don’t want to be uncompetitive when we have guests coming.”

Con Lands Cleveland Orchestra Conductor

The Con has a new face this fall as Steven Smith ta kes over the helm as Music Director of Orchestras. He replaces former director Paul Polivnick, who left after a five-year tenure. Smith will have the responsibility of leading bi-weekly rehearsals for both Conservatory orchestras and conducting them in concerts when no guest conductor is scheduled. In addition to this high-profile job, Smith will also occupy a place on the visiting faculty of the Conducting Department. Both positions have contracts signed only through this academic year.

Women’s Soccer Team Earns Back-to-Back Wins

The Oberlin College women’s soccer team added two wins and a loss to their record this past week in games against Cedarville University, Olivet College and Ursuline College, improving to 4-3. The team built upon a 1-1 weekend by shutting out Ursuline on Wednesday in a 4-0 run, while playing without its leading goal-scorer, senior Courtney Stackhouse.

Gov’t Has No Case For Iraq War

To the Editors:

he ongoing debate on Iraq perhaps has tended to be silent on one important aspect: Mr. Bush, since his installation as president of the U.S., has sought aggressively to alter, and often undo, policies of the preceding administration. In matters of foreign policy he has worked to minimize any U.S. submission to rules and interests of the international community; for example: the denunciation of the Kyoto accords, the refusal to sign a Treaty banning biochemical weapons, the strenuous efforts to counter the constitution of a viable International Court of Law, etc.
