Clarification of Holiday Spending

To the Editors:

In difficult financial times, it is especially important to create informed opinions based on an accurate set of numbers. With that in mind, I must set the record straight on the amount of spent for the campus-wide Holiday Reception hosted by our President.
In the Nov. 1 issue of the Review it was erroneously reported that the Annual Holiday Reception cost $75,000. The event has a set budget of $7,500. Invitations to this event are sent to 1100-1200 employees, retirees, widows and affiliate scholars along with the spouses/significant others. The Holiday Reception includes children of employees as well. When President Dye arrived on campus, she initiated a policy to invite all employees to annual events. This has not always been the case and marks her commitment to building a strong community for Oberlin College.
We have always closely monitored the costs of events while continuing to recognize the importance of gathering our colleagues and families together.
